Earthquake
Magnitude > Step One
So far we've examined maps of
earthquakes plotted by time period and by depth; now we'll look at
earthquakes by magnitude.
- If you don't have a QUEST window
open, mouse over the Tools button along the top banner of
this page. Scroll down to Web Tools and click on the Launch
QUEST button (Unless it's open already).
- Next, click on the Menu button
in the bottom left corner of the QUEST window.
- Click on Map Area
and the map area window will appear.
- Next, select World
in the Region pull down menu and click OK to close the
window.
- Now,click on Data Sets
(on the Menu button) and the Data Sets window will appear in the middle
of your QUEST window.
- Select EARTHQUAKES
from the pull down menu and then choose SELECT EARTHQUAKE CRITERIA.
- Next, you'll select an earthquake
magnitude range begin by clicking on the Magnitude button and
using the Minimum and Maximum text boxes to select a
magnitude range. When
you are finished click OK button in the blue window
and the OK button in the tan Data Sets window.
(Use a time period of one year, and reset the depth field to its maximum
range, 0 - 700 km. For the larger events you might want to experiment
with a time frame of two or more years.)
- Lastly, click on the GET
MAP button and in a few moments your map will appear in the main
map area (the Get Map text will turn red when your map has
been submitted).
Repeat this process for each
of the following
maps:
Map 1 4.0 - 4.9
Map 2 5.0 - 5.9
Map 3 6.0 - 6.9
Map 4 7.0 - 7.9
Map 5 8.0 - 8.9
